Etsy fees for UK sellers — and the VAT trap that costs newcomers real money
UK sellers pay the same 6.5% transaction fee as everyone else, but a higher processing rate and an extra regulatory fee. And if you are VAT-registered, a fifth of what the buyer pays was never your money to begin with.
The UK fee stack in 2026
| Fee | UK rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | £0.16 | Each listing and renewal, plus each extra unit sold |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item + shipping + gift wrap (excludes VAT) |
| Payment processing | 4% + £0.20 | Item + shipping + gift wrap + VAT |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.48% | Item + shipping + gift wrap |
| Offsite Ads | 15% or 12% | The whole order, capped at $100 per order |
Etsy bills the listing fee as USD 0.20 and converts it, so the sterling figure moves a little with the exchange rate. The 6.5% transaction fee is identical in every country.
Why UK sellers keep less than US sellers
Three differences, and they compound:
- Higher processing. 4% + £0.20 versus 3% + $0.25 in the US — roughly one extra percentage point on every order.
- A regulatory fee the US does not have. The UK has a digital services tax, so Etsy passes on 0.48% of the order.
- VAT on the fees themselves. Etsy adds 20% VAT to its own charges for UK sellers. VAT-registered sellers reclaim this; unregistered sellers simply absorb it.
The VAT trap: a fifth of the price is not yours
If you are VAT-registered and your listed price includes VAT — which is how prices are normally shown to UK consumers — then the price the buyer pays contains tax that you owe to HMRC. It is not revenue.
On a £30 item with VAT at 20%:
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| The buyer pays | £30.00 |
| VAT inside that price (20 ÷ 120) | − £5.00 |
| Your actual revenue | £25.00 |
| Total Etsy fees | − £3.65 |
| You keep | £21.35 |
The VAT is not lost — you remit it and can reclaim VAT on your own business purchases. But it is never profit, and treating it as profit is how sellers end up discounting themselves into a loss.
The same £30 item, three ways
| Seller situation | Revenue | Fees | You keep | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Not VAT-registered, no ads | £30.00 | £3.65 | £26.35 | 12.2% |
| VAT-registered, no ads | £25.00 | £3.65 | £21.35 | 12.2% of revenue |
| VAT-registered, Offsite Ads order | £25.00 | £8.15 | £16.85 | 27.2% of revenue |
Notice that the effective fee rate is the same percentage either way — but the money you keep falls by £5 purely because of VAT. And an Offsite Ads order on top of VAT takes nearly half the listed price.
When do you have to register for VAT?
The registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in any rolling 12-month period. Below it, registration is voluntary. Above it, you must register — and from that point every price you list contains VAT you owe.
Some sellers register voluntarily below the threshold to reclaim VAT on materials. That only makes sense if your buyers are mostly VAT-registered businesses; for consumer sales it usually costs more than it saves.
Do you pay VAT on Etsy's fees?
Yes. Etsy charges UK VAT at 20% on its own fees. So the £3.65 of fees above actually costs a VAT-registered seller £3.65 and generates reclaimable input tax. If you are not registered, the VAT on fees is a real cost that no one refunds — it is one more reason the effective UK fee burden sits above the headline numbers.
Enter your VAT rate in the calculator and it will peel the VAT out of your revenue automatically rather than treating it as income.
Quick answers
Is the transaction fee higher in the UK?
No. The 6.5% transaction fee, the $0.20 listing fee and the 15%/12% Offsite Ads rate are the same worldwide. Only payment processing and the regulatory fee differ.
Does free shipping avoid the fees?
No. If you fold shipping into the item price, the fees simply apply to the higher price. Etsy charges the transaction fee on whatever the buyer pays for the item, plus any shipping you charge separately.
Where can I check my own numbers?
Use the fee calculator — switch the country selector to United Kingdom and enter your VAT rate. It applies the 0.48% regulatory fee and the 4% + £0.20 processing rate automatically.
