Etsy fees for Canadian sellers — and the one rate that changes with your buyer

Canada is one of only a handful of countries where Etsy has two payment processing rates. Which one you pay depends on where the buyer is, and the difference is a full percentage point on every foreign order.

The Canadian fee stack in 2026

FeeRateCharged on
Listing fee$0.20 USD (about C$0.28)Each listing, each extra unit sold, and each four-month renewal
Transaction fee6.5%Item + shipping + gift wrap (excludes tax)

Payment processing — international4% + C$0.25Orders from anywhere else, tax included
Regulatory operating fee0.50%Item + shipping + gift wrap, every order

Etsy Plus$10 USD / monthOptional

Two lines here separate Canada from the United States. The regulatory fee of 0.50% has no US equivalent, and the processing table has a second, higher rate that US sellers do not have at all.

Note the "or the United States". A buyer in Ohio is charged the domestic Canadian rate, 3% + C$0.25. A buyer in London is not. So the split is not Canada-versus-everyone — it is Canada and the US versus the rest of the world, which is worth knowing if most of your traffic comes from the States.

Domestic versus international, on real numbers

The same C$30 item with free shipping, no sales tax, single quantity, no advertising:

OrderListingTransactionProcessingRegulatoryTotal feesYou keep
Buyer in Canada or the USC$0.28C$1.95C$1.15C$0.15C$3.53C$26.47
Buyer anywhere elseC$0.28C$1.95C$1.45C$0.15C$3.83C$26.17

Thirty cents on a C$30 order. The effective rate moves from 11.8% to 12.8% — a full point, purely because of where the buyer lives. On a C$100 order the same switch costs you a dollar: fees go from C$10.53 to C$11.53.

A fuller example, with shipping

Sell one item for C$35 with C$7 shipping, so the order total is C$42. No sales tax, no advertising, buyer in Canada:

LineAmount
Order totalC$42.00
Listing fee− C$0.28
Transaction fee (6.5% of C$42.00)− C$2.73
Payment processing (3% + C$0.25)− C$1.51
Regulatory operating fee (0.5%)− C$0.21
Total Etsy fees− C$4.73
You keepC$37.27

Etsy takes 11.3% of the order. Note that the shipping you charged was not exempt from any of it: the C$7 was inside the base for the transaction fee, the processing fee and the regulatory fee.

Now make it an Offsite Ads order. If the buyer arrived through an Etsy ad, the same C$42 order carries an extra 15%: C$6.30. Total fees jump to C$11.03 and you keep C$30.97. The effective rate goes from 11.3% to 26.3% — nearly one dollar in four. Nothing about your price, your cost or your buyer changed; only the path the buyer took to get there.

GST and HST: what is and is not your money

Two separate things are going on, and they are easy to confuse.

1. Tax on the sale. Etsy acts as the marketplace facilitator and collects GST or HST at checkout on Canadian orders, then remits it. That tax is never your revenue — but the payment processing fee is still charged on the tax-inclusive amount, which is one reason processing on a taxed order looks higher than you expect.

2. Tax on Etsy's fees. Etsy also applies GST or HST to its own charges. If you are registered and Etsy has your number, the treatment is usually clean: you charge tax on your sales, reclaim tax on your costs, and remit the difference. If you are not registered, the tax Etsy adds to its fees is simply an extra cost with nothing to reclaim it against.

The rates depend on your province. GST is 5%. In the HST provinces the single combined rate is 13% or 15% — Ontario at the lower end, the Atlantic provinces at the upper. Quebec and British Columbia layer their own provincial tax on top of the 5% GST instead. Because Etsy's treatment depends on whether you have given it a valid registration number, check what your own invoices actually show rather than assuming.

Quick answers

Is there really a regulatory fee in Canada?

Yes — 0.50% of item plus shipping plus gift wrap, on every order from a shop with a Canadian bank account. It is roughly four times the UK's and about a third of France's. It is not charged in the United States, so it is one of the structural reasons Canadian shops keep slightly less than American ones on identical sales.

Does the listing fee change with quantity?

Yes. Sell three units in one order and you pay three listing fees — C$0.84 rather than C$0.28. It is the single most commonly missed line on high-volume, low-price listings.

What is the Offsite Ads cap in Canadian dollars?

US$100, which works out to roughly C$140 depending on the exchange rate. Etsy sets the cap in US dollars, so the figure in your own currency moves.

How do I check my own numbers?

Use the fee calculator, select Canada, and switch on Buyer is outside my country for orders from beyond Canada and the US — it applies the 4% + C$0.25 rate automatically. Cross-check the 0.5% line against the regulatory fee page, and see the Offsite Ads page for why that C$6.30 arrives.

Rates last verified October 2026 against Etsy's published fee pages. GST/HST treatment depends on your registration status and province — this page is general information, not tax advice. Confirm your position with the CRA or an accountant, and check Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy before pricing. The C$ figures for fees Etsy sets in US dollars move with the exchange rate.
